> MARGARITAVILLE TEQUILA
Ever since a west coast tour swing
that resulted in a margarita party
after a show in San Diego I have
been trying to get Gary to try Jimmy
Buffett's first venture into the
tequila market - Margaritaville
Gold. And while I admire Gary's
taste in expensive tequilas, that
refined taste does come with the
attitude that any tequila under
$40 a bottle and yet above $7.99
is pretty much the same.
Now I'm not making any great claims
that Margaritaville Tequila is one
of the finer tequilas... the kind
you would sip all night long. It's
not, frankly, but I don't think
that's what it's trying to be. Instead
it's seeking to fill the need of
Jimmy Buffett fans everywhere -
namely a really good, inexpensive
tequila perfect for mixing with
ice and margarita mix in a blender.
In the past, this role has largely
been filled by Jose Cuervo Gold.
And versus that, Margaritaville
is a better choice for those seeking
a tequila with all the bite of Cuervo
Gold but with more of an oak taste.
I'm not so sure that it's a more
refined taste as much as a taste
with more depth.
Gary was skeptical, of course.
I eventually convinced him to try
a sip of the Margaritaville Gold
straight up. He prepared for the
worst.... "Wow," he finally
said. "Not bad. I'm not giving
up drinking my (favorite brand deleted),
but I bet this stuff would be great
in a margarita." Exactly.
